PAII News You Can Use 6-9-2015

News You Can Use – our weekly cruise thru the issues and topics for the business of Innkeeping.

5 Unconventional Ways to Create Videos That Engage Facebook Fans tells us that video plays on Facebook is up 785% over last year – that’s not a typo! After admitting that a ‘con’ is the time commitment, the article does share tips for those of us with time and budget limitations.  Once again, I’ll recommend choosing from the ‘you might also like’ links: I especially liked “30 Magic Marketing Words You Should be Using”.  Some examples:  By using “you”, it’s as though you are speaking to the customer; “value” implies getting something, while “cost, price” implies losing money. “Best” is overused; try “our top seller” “most preferred” or “guest favorite”.

Is It Too Late to Fight Back Against Airbnb?
We’re well aware of the issues: tax dollars, ethics, fairness, health/safety, insurance … and many of us are regularly meeting with local officials, and licensing agencies to advocate for equal treatment for all lodging providers.  What can we learn from airbnb to use in our business?  “The commentary and description of the rooms being sold reads like a storybook by people who truly care. They are not selling; they are trying to make your travel more interesting.”  Do your room descriptions have the focus on the guest?   “Moreover, the presentation is seamless on mobile, tablet or a laptop computer” – and you’ve certainly heard this before in this newsletter and from PAII conference presenters!

Millennials leading multigenerational travel
If your niche is ‘family friendly’ you’ll appreciate knowing that Millennials took an average of 2.6 trips with children in the past 12 months compared to two trips for baby boomers.  Those very couples who previously enjoyed B&Bs are now are traveling with their family, and the fastest way to a parent’s heart is to know their kids are welcome.  You’ll find a few tips for making families feel special at your inn.

Innkeeping Recipe
This week’s recipe is from the Bed & Breakfast Association of Virginia’s website – and we appreciate that Oaks Granola is gluten free, adaptable for vegans, and low in sugar.
‘til next week!

Welcome Casablanca Ventures

Wynn Salisch of Casablanca Ventures says, “We are the America’s only credit card processing
company founded by an actual hotelier and graduate of Cornell School of Hotel Administration!” Needless to say, they know hospitality. For 15 years, Casablanca Ventures has provided payment processing cost reduction, education, technology, PCI data security assistance and other small business financial services.

They see one of the biggest challenges to the Innkeeping industry today as the protection of privacy and personal data of inn guests from both employees and digital criminals. And, in their own industry, they see “ongoing advances in data security tools” as a trend that is critical to the ongoing success of innkeepers.

Casablanca Ventures will be introducing new products this year that will make life and business easier for Innkeepers – stay tuned to hear about them!

Thank you to Casablanca Ventures for supporting PAII and our industry at our show in January.

PAII News You Can Use 6-2-2015

FTC Workshop on the "Sharing Economy" (aka Uber and Airbnb)
The lead article in our aptly-named publication (News You Can Use) addresses the not-so-aptly-named “Sharing Economy”.  (Really, what is being “shared” – it’s the usual exchange of $ for goods / services.)  As you wade thru the document, you’ll find the issues of licensing/insurance/taxation addressed on pages 6 & 7.  These tend to be the core of our (the innkeeping industry that is ‘playing by the rules’) concerns.  A brief excerpt:  In particular, the workshop will consider issues arising from the application of consumer protection principles and regulatory regimes to new sources of supply enabled by sharing economy platforms, as well as the role of competition policy in informing these issues. It also will assess competition enforcement issues that such platforms may raise, now or in the future.
Particularly relevant questions for your comment include:
·       How have sharing economy platforms affected competition, existing suppliers, innovation, and consumer choice in sectors in which they operate? How might they do so in the future?
·       How can state and local regulators meet legitimate regulatory goals (such as protecting consumers, public health and safety) while also promoting competition and innovation?

The final deadline for comments is August 4, 2015 and you’ll find the link to do so on page 7.

B&Bs battle to stay relevant in changing industry
Change is difficult – and “if you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you always got” is often wistful thinking.  The not-so-new reality for innkeepers is that more time is likely spent on the computer than in the kitchen or face-to-face with guests:
When Carol Matsumoto first started with Captain Grant's she used the computer for about 15 minutes a day. Now, she said, she has to spend close to four hours a day online.
Kay Lucas, Brigadoon B&B notes:  ”… the mobile people are the new walk-ins.  We used to have people just walk up to the door and now we have people driving on I-95 on their phones saying we’re on our way.”
And, a tourism exec noted “Look at B&Bs as a consumer (would),” he said. “If there is no easy way to reserve a room, they aren’t going to go there.”
So that, in a nutshell, is why we here at PAII share those ‘techie’ how-to articles with you, and arrange for those very informative webinars, presented by our industry partners!

Serving Gluten Free Guests
And, staying relevant in our changing industry includes being well-versed on the dietary preferences / requirements of B&B guests. PAII members - check out the webinar, archived on the PAII website.

Welcome Cloudbeds!

This is the first of many "spotlights" we'd like to shine on our industry vendor partners who have committed to showing at the Trade Show in January.

As Cloudbeds says on their website, they want to help their customers “spend less time with spreadsheets and more time with your guests.”

Cloudbeds' award-winning, browser-based hospitality management software is trusted by thousands of hotels, hostels, inns and groups in over 115 countries. Truly an international company, they have offices in San Diego, São Paulo, and Dublin.

Brandon Dennis of Cloudbeds was one of the first to sign up for the 2016 Trade Show.  You might remember Brandon from previous PAII trade shows.  We are thrilled that he is now with Cloudbeds and bringing their software solutions to our Innkeeping community.

When asked what challenges he sees for the Innkeeping industry, Brandon pointed out the necessity for innkeepers to master technology, both to operate their businesses more efficiently, but also to find new guests.

He went on to say that one key trend he has seen is that guests seem to be splintering off from the big OTAs. He feels that guests today are “finding small, niche online communities that cater to their specific interests. These can include backpacking or adventuring.”

“While it's important to stay connected to the big OTAs if you have much inventory to fill,” Brandon says, “it's also well worth the time finding and connecting to the small, niche marketplaces out there that fit your inn's style and charm.”

What do Brandon and Cloudbeds like best about the Innkeeping industry? “We love the limitless creativity innkeepers put into their properties. Whether it is specific themes for each room, or lavish gardens, the quirks of each B&B make them destinations in and of themselves.”

Looks like Cloudbeds will fit right in with our members!

Our 2016 Trade Show is "New and Improved" for Vendors!

To our Innkeeping Industry Partners,
My most important message:  We heard you! The 2016 Trade Show will be improved for YOU!
First of all, I’m pleased to be the Conference Manager for the 2016 conference and show – and I am very excited to make improvements on the trade show, in particular.
As some of you know, I was on “your side of the table” in my previous life – as a manufacturer, my company exhibited in about 30 shows every year. So, I do understand your challenges, and I intend to do everything I can to make the 2016 show successful for all of us. Here are some of the improvements we already have planned:
  • More days of trade show! The trade show will open on Monday, January 11 at 3 pm – so, for many attendees, this will be the first activity. (There may be a pre-conference workshop going on, but for those who are arriving that day, this will definitely be their first stop.)
In addition, the Welcome reception will be held in the exhibit hall, so that even those who attend the pre-conference workshop will be sure to join us on the trade show floor around 5:30.
  • Longer hours! We heard you – that while serving lunch in the exhibit hall does draw the Innkeepers in, there was not enough time for lunch and visiting booths. So, we will extend the dedicated trade show time for one more hour on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
This means we will be starting the conference programming earlier each morning and shortening the breakouts by a few minutes in order to provide this extra time for trade show.
  • Enhanced vendor listings in the Conference Program with a brief explanation of what your business offers, not just your company name.
  • More advance communication with Innkeepers and registered attendees – such as December emails with enhanced vendor listings that encourage Innkeepers to make appointments.
  • We will be forming a Conference Community Committee soon – and I encourage you to volunteer. The purpose of this committee is to create ways to make the conference and trade show more cohesive and to build more of an inclusive industry community – let’s get innovative!
This industry is small and we all need each other to thrive…you value the Innkeepers as your customers and Innkeepers cannot run their businesses without reliable suppliers like you.
We are grateful for your past support, and we truly hope you’ll be part of our “new and improved 2016 Innkeeping Conference & Trade Show!
Please do not hesitate to send me your comments, questions or ideas – I look forward to working with you to make the biggest and best show ever.
And, don’t forget our Early Bird promotion for trade show booths running now through June 10.  Buy now for the best possible price. http://www.innkeepingshow.com/exhibitor-information to register.
See you in Austin!
Sincerely,
Ruth Ann Hattori, Conference Manager

Speakers Wanted for our January 2016 Conference

The Professional Association of Innkeeper International (PAII) is planning to hold our 2016 Conference & Trade Show in Austin, TX on January 10-14. We are pleased to invite you to propose to deliver keynotes, break-out sessions or even a 4-6 hour Pre-conference workshop. The Pre-Conference day would be Monday, January 11. Keynotes and break-outs will be presented on Tuesday, January 12 and Wednesday, January 13.

For over 20 years, PAII has been the only national association serving the owners and operators of Bed and Breakfast type inns. Like many other small business segments, many of our attendees are husband and wife teams, many of whom have left or retired the corporate world to pursue this intimate style of hospitality. And, like most small firms, they seek education about every aspect of running a business.

Please note: consultants or other types of vendors (current or would be) specific to the Innkeeping industry whose speaking proposals are accepted will be required to purchase a booth and participate in the Trade Show. (If your business is not a vendor to the innkeeping industry, that requirement would be waived.) If you are based in Texas, you may qualify for our “made in TX” table-top section, for which the cost is lower than a booth.

We thank you in advance for your interest in joining us in Austin! Please address an questions to conference@paii.org.

Please download and return the fillable form for consideration:
